Basement Laundry Room Before and After
We didn't have much of a laundry room to begin with, just a washer and dryer in the middle of the room. We planned the layout of the basement, dedicating approximately one fifth of the floor plan for the laundry room. Here is what we ended up with!
s mentioned in our first post about the basement, we basically started from scratch down here. We framed up walls, installed new insulation, vapour barrier, sub floor, drywall etc. We installed 4 recessed lights in the laundry room instead of going with a single fixture. We painted the whole space white and used a dark grey vinyl click flooring that was recommended for laundry rooms.
As in any laundry room, storage and a work surface is a must. We ordered Ikea cabinetry and countertop to run along one wall to store cleaning supplies, extra bedding, light bulbs, and extra bulk items like paper towels that don't need to clutter up the kitchen.
We acquired this wire storage shelf during the move from our parents' house. The shelf works perfect for our detergents and dryer sheets. You can see how we made over the tray in our first 30 Sec DIY series on YouTube here.
We jacked the washer and dryer up on a pedestal we made out of 2x10's and plywood. Originally we had planned on buying ones with drawers but it was way cheaper to make one. Plus we didn't really need the extra storage. You can see how we made the pedestal here. It is a saver on the back; my only wish is that did it sooner!
Of course, if you are like me and put off doing laundry until you have no underwear left, a TV is a must! I end up spending a ton of time catching up on laundry so the TV is great company for the days when I want to do 17 loads at once. Half hour cycles in the machines make for perfect folding and watching time. Forty inches might be a little over kill but hey, at least we will have an extra decent size tv when we move. (Editor's note from Chris: 40" is not over kill, nor is it a decent size TV).
Next house we plan on integrating the laundry room into the getting ready room or at least have it upstairs. Maybe I will be more inclined to do laundry then…. ahh who am I kidding.
