Becki's Office Progress
Since I am self employed, having my own office is a must. A huge bonus in this house was having the office on the main level, away from the living area, which provides somewhat of a healthy work/life separation. Additionally, I don't have to drag my clients through our entire home when they stop by. Below is the office right after we moved in. The entire house was painted this beige.
When we moved in, we dove head first into the entire renovation. During this time we temporarily painted the office and stuck the computer in there since I needed to work right away. Now that a good portion of the house is done, it was time to get at my space. I set up a temporary office in our production room (before and after coming soon on that guy) and got to work.
I still liked the monochromatic colour scheme I used originally, so I kept it but did a fresh coat of black and changed the walls from light grey to white. The ceiling was still stucco and we really didn't want to go through the hassle of re-drywalling (after Chris' office fiasco he never wants to plaster a ceiling again). We came up with the idea of covering the stucco with a wood plank ceiling which would be a whole lot less work mess and still look cool. We installed this using PL construction adhesive and brad nails. Before we started, we marked out where all the strapping was so we knew the brads would hold. The electrical was also run prior to covering the ceiling with the wood. Once it was all up (the process took about 4 evenings) it was then painted black to give a "wrap around effect" with the adjacent black feature wall.
The room only had one light. We had installed a new fixture last year which we kept. We added 4 recessed lights around the perimeter of the room. All are on dimmers and are programmable for dynamic lighting. The new recessed lights alone make a massive difference to the atmosphere of the room.
Aside from the ceiling and electrical, we didn't have to do much else here. We added some new trim to match what we installed in the rest of the house and, of course, a new closet door and hardware. Death to the 6-panel!
I plan to reuse all the furniture that I've ordered throughout the past year. I will also continue using my refinished desk, which is holding up well!
